Things to consider before getting a dog

Making the decision to get a dog is not one to be taken lightly. You need to take into account things like your work schedule, your living situation, and whether or not you have another pet. There are also many different breeds of dogs, each with their own personality and needs. This guide will help you think through all of these factors before making the final decision on whether or not a dog is right for you.

Can you afford it?

First of all, owning a dog is expensive. Food, licensing, toys, and treats are not the only ongoing costs when it comes to having a dog in your life. You will also have to take into account veterinary care expenses.

If you plan on getting pet health insurance, make sure it will be worth your while regarding premiums per month versus the average cost of veterinarian services per year.

Most dogs require yearly shots and preventive care like spaying and neutering which can be expensive. Still, many owners prefer the extra peace of mind that comes with knowing their dog is healthy and prepared for any unexpected illnesses. If you are not financially ready to handle these expenses, it may be better to wait until you are.

Do you have enough room?

Different breeds have different space requirements. For example, a large breed dog will need more room to move around than a small one. In addition, certain dogs may not do well living in an apartment or other small space.

If you live in a studio apartment and only have the ability to take your dog out for walks, do not get a breed that is known for its high energy level. Likewise, if you have a fenced-in yard, do not get a breed that is known to be a digger or chewer.

Do you have the right supplies?

It is essential to have the supplies you need before bringing a new dog home. These can include but are not limited to food, water bowls, leashes, collars, brushes and combs for grooming, shampoo, and conditioner. You can get most of this stuff at top-range pet stores like Exceptional Pets. Just make a list before you go so you know exactly what you need.

Do you have the time?

Dogs need exercise, both mental and physical. If you work long hours or are not able to get home in time to walk your dog, that’s not the best situation for either of you.

Many dogs also require regular feeding, which can take up time in the morning or evening. Don’t forget about training, a well-trained dog is a joy to own, but it does take some time and effort.

Do you have another pet?

If you already have a pet, make sure you do your research on the breeds of dogs that would be compatible with it. For example, some breeds of dogs are known to be aggressive towards cats.

If you have a dog, do not get a breed that is known for being bossy or dominant around other dogs. If you have never owned a pet before, now is the time to consider getting an animal that will be good with children. Otherwise, you may get yourself into a situation where you have to re-home the dog.
