20 Roof Maintenance Tips You Need to Know

If you’re like most homeowners in the United States, you probably don’t think about your roof until there’s a problem. And by that point, it may be too late.

That’s why it’s important to be proactive about roof maintenance, and know what to look for so you can take care of any potential issues before they turn into bigger problems. Here are 20 tips to help get you started.

1. Inspect your roof regularly

The best way to stay on top of any potential problems with your roof is to inspect it regularly. Inspections can be as simple as walking around the house and checking for missing shingles, or getting up on a ladder to look for leaks.

2. Clean your gutters regularly

Clogged gutters can cause water damage to your roof, so it’s important to clean them regularly. Debris like leaves and sticks can easily clog up gutters, so be sure to remove them at least once a month.

3. Trim trees and bushes around your house

Trees and bushes that are too close to your house can damage your roof. If you have any trees or bushes near your home, be sure to trim them back so they’re not hanging over your roof.

4. Check for cracks or holes in your roof

If you see any cracks or holes in your roof, it’s important to get them fixed as soon as possible. Water can seep through these cracks and cause damage to your roof and your home.

5. Get a professional inspection every few years

Even if you’re regularly inspecting and cleaning your roof, it’s still a good idea to have a professional inspection every few years. They can catch problems that you might have missed, and help you keep your roof in good condition.

6. Make sure your attic is well-ventilated

Your attic should be well-ventilated in order to keep the temperature regulated. If it’s not, that can cause your roof to overheat and damage the shingles.

7. Keep an eye on your roofline

If you see any sagging or bending in your roofline, it could be a sign of damage and you should have it inspected by a professional.

8. Repair any damage as soon as possible

If you notice any damage to your roof, be sure to repair it as soon as possible. Delaying repairs can lead to bigger and more expensive problems down the road.

9. Install a gutter guard system

Gutter guards can help keep your gutters from getting clogged with debris, which can help prevent water damage to your roof.

10. Get your chimney cleaned regularly

If you have a fireplace, it’s important to get your chimney cleaned regularly. A build-up of soot and debris can be a fire hazard, and it can also damage your roof.

11. Check for loose shingles

Loose shingles can easily blow off in strong winds, so be sure to check them regularly and replace any that are loose.

12. Replace damaged shingles

If any of your shingles are cracked, curled, or missing, be sure to replace them as soon as possible. Damaged shingles leave your roof vulnerable to water damage and leaks.

13. Use a hose to check for leaks

If you’re not sure whether you have a leak in your roof, try using a hose to test it. Run the hose over the suspected area and see if any water leaks through.

14. Keep an eye on your energy bills

If you notice that your energy bills have been going up, it could be a sign that you have a leak in your roof. Leaks can cause your home to lose heat, which will make your furnace work harder and increase your energy costs.

15. Install insulation in your attic

Insulation can help keep your attic cooler, which can help prevent your roof from overheating.

17. Check your roof for snow loads

If you live in an area that gets heavy snowfall, it’s important to check your roof for snow loads. Too much weight from the snow can cause damage to your roof and gutters.

18. Get a roof rake to remove the snow

If you do have a lot of snow on your roof, be sure to use a roof rake to remove it. A roof rake is specially designed to safely remove the snow from your roof without damaging the shingles.

19. Repair any ice dams that form

Ice dams can form on the edge of your roof, and if they’re not repaired, they can cause water to back up under your shingles and cause damage.

20. Be prepared for bad weather

If you know a storm is coming, be sure to take some preventative measures to protect your roof. If there are any loose items around your home, such as branches or lawn furniture, be sure to secure them so they don’t blow onto your roof and cause damage.
